Water Industry Approved Plumber Scheme (WIAPS)
Approved, compliant plumbers
The government is cracking down on ‘cowboy building’ in a number of ways.
Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations
were implemented in 1999 to protect public water supplies.
The Regulations apply to anyone carrying out certain works or installations.
Under the legislation, owners and occupiers of premises which have public water supply connections, and persons who install or alter such plumbing systems, have a legal duty to comply with the Regulations. They can face prosecution for a criminal offence if they fail to do so.
An approved plumber is compliant with the new legislation
and can carry out certain works without having to apply for water supplier’s consent which can take up to ten days.
Plumbers can be authorised through WIAPS or by any relevant organisation recognised by the government.
